Staying Healthy when you Visit Cincinnati: Active Adventures

The luxurious Willis Graves Bed & Breakfast is the best place to pamper yourself when you visit Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky. Our historic inn is also perfectly located for active adventures, whether you want to hike a trail or explore Cincinnati on a guided walking tour.

You can stay healthy on your vacation, and you won’t even have to work out. These are our favorite activities that combine exploration and adventure with an active lifestyle.

Take a Guided Walking Tour with American Legacy Tours

You can visit Cincinnati and take your time to explore the city on foot. But if you want a real adventure steeped in history, a walking tour with American Legacy Tours is the way to go. There’s a lot that you’ll get out of a walking tour that you wouldn’t find on your own. Tour guides have intimate knowledge of the city, its past, and its people. Walking tours will get you into some of the places that are rarely seen by visitors, including historic beer tunnels and city crypts.

The Ultimate Queen City Underground Tour is highly recommended. You’ll explore the Over the Rhine neighborhood on foot and see the largest intact collection of 19th Century American architecture. You’ll hear stories of the neighborhood on your journey, which was home to more than 130 saloons, bars, and beer halls over the generations. This tour then heads underground into recently rediscovered tunnels that were essential to the city’s brewing history. You’ll see a hidden crypt where some of Cincinnati’s most important historical figures are laid to rest.

If you have an interest in the paranormal and the folklore surrounding some of the city’s creepiest stories, you’ll love the Ultimate Queen City is Haunted Tour. With an expert guide, you’ll learn about some of the shocking true stories of the Over the Rhine neighborhood. This tour ends in the historic Emery Theater, a grand theater that is prized for both its architecture and cultural significance.

Mixing leisure, fun, and historical facts and tales, walking tours are a great way to stay active when you visit Cincinnati.

Hiking at Big Bone in Northern Kentucky

You can visit Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky and experience the best of both the city and the beautiful countryside. Willis Graves Bed & Breakfast is situated in the beautiful rolling hills of Northern Kentucky. We’re just minutes from the city across the Ohio River, and there’s great access to State Parks and local trails.

The Big Bone Lick State Historic Site is a State Park and the perfect destination for a day trip from our luxurious B&B. It’s a wonderful place to explore the natural history of the region, with a museum and research center at the site. But if you’re looking to stay active when you visit Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky, it’s the trails that will get you most excited.

There are around 4.5 miles of walking trails and while you can combine them all, there are some loops that will give you breathtaking views with some light to moderate exercise. The Bison Trace Trail is just over a mile out and back and is rated easy to moderate in difficulty. It’s perfect for seeing the majestic bison at the park and it will take you through some gorgeous countryside.

I recommend taking the hike close to sunset. This is when the bison leave the shade and the herd starts to move around, which makes for some much better viewing.

Take a Kayak Along the Ohio River

The Ohio River will be an ever-present feature when you visit Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky. The river forms the state border around Cincinnati and it’s a centerpiece of the city, with dining, entertainment, and adventure focused along its banks on both sides.

River channels are a big part of the geography in this region and the Whitewater River flows to the Great Miami River, and later onto the Ohio River. You can start a Kayak adventure from the Whitewater River at Green Acres Kayak. This rental company offers excellent equipment, great rates, and three trips depending on your level of fitness and the time you have available. Choose from an 8, 5, or 3 mile adventure on the water.

Green Acres Kayak is less than 30 minutes from Willis Graves Bed & Breakfast.
