Things to Do at Historic Dinsmore Homestead in Burlington

Dinsmore Homestead is a historic house museum. The property was home to the Dinsmore family from 1842 to 1926 and remains beautifully preserved in its original condition. Learn about the family’s lives, business ventures, connection to the Titanic, and relationship to historic figures like Theodore Roosevelt. Visitors can tour the main house to see its beautiful architecture, along with numerous historic artifacts, artworks, and family heirlooms. You can also tour the outbuildings, see authentic nineteenth-century farming equipment and cooking tools. The Dinsmore Homestead is open from April through December each year on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. 

Visit the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati

The Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati, OH, celebrates the courage and dedication of American abolitionists. Centered around the history of the underground railroad, visitors will learn the harrowing histories and incredible stories of some of the most prolific freedom fighters who ever lived. You’ll witness permanent displays featuring artifacts, displays, and films. These displays serve as an important reminder of who the enslaved were, how they got here, how they lived, and how they became free. This museum is an honest, eye-opening, and moving experience that should not be missed.  

Tour the Ark Encounter & Creation Museum in Burlington

In the Hills of Williamstown, KY, you’ll find the Ark Encounter. Built to biblical dimensions, this massive ship is seven stories tall, and one-and-a-half football fields in length. Visitors can explore the exhibits inside to appreciate the incredible architecture, and learn about the biblical tale of Noah and the flood. Outside, visitors can enjoy their zoo and petting zoo. Plus, there’s a thrilling zipline course with the longest line (2,100 feet to be exact) in the Midwest. The Creation Museum in Petersburg, KY, is another larger-than-life experience. This 75,000 square foot facility has over 150 exhibits! Included are a real Allosaur fossil, animatronic dinosaurs, a realistic Garden of Eden display, botanical gardens, and much more. 

Experience The Krohn Conservatory in Cincinnati

Opened in Cincinnati in 1933, the Krohn Conservatory invites you to enjoy its collection of over 3,500 plant species, curated from all around the globe. Visitors can’t get enough of the Orchid house, home to a rotating display of over 1,500 of these delicate flowers. Explore a brilliant tropical rain forest, as recreated in the palm house. Enjoy the greenery of the fern house, the unique species of the desert house, and the tiny wonders of the bonsai house. If the natural sights aren’t enough, visitors always admire the original Art Deco design features still found around the conservatory. 

Browse the Antiques in Burlington

The Burlington Antique Show is an antique lover’s dream, with over 200 antique dealers under one roof. To catch them, you’ll have to time your visit just right, as they’re open on the 3rd Sunday of every month, from April to October, at the Boone County Fairgrounds. Don’t fret if you miss the show, there are plenty of other antiquing opportunities around Burlington! The Florence Antique Mall is full of treasures waiting to be found, and at 50,000 square feet, you could get lost there for hours. Another absolute gem is Lyle House Antiques in Lexington, KY, which specializes in fine 18th and 19th-century furnishings and décor.
